Dogs and cats in Texas must be vaccinated by a veterinarian by the time the animal is 3 months of age, receive a booster 12 months after the initial vaccine. All puppies and dogs with no history of previous rabies vaccine will be required to have a rabies vaccine 12 months after the initial vaccination. Thereafter, the animal must be vaccinated at intervals of no longer than 36 months. Vaccines and preventives start between 6-8 weeks of age. It is important to vaccinate your puppy prior to any exposure to other animals or involvement in activities as training classes, dog parks, or boarding and grooming. Below are general recommendations: timetables for vaccines and preventives, I have shared the costs I recently have paid and have added descriptions of the vaccines or tests. 6–8 weeks- Puppy 1st series • Distemper, adenovirus II, parvo, parainfluenza, lepto • General deworm 9–11 weeks Puppy 2nd series •Distemper, adenovirus II, parvo, parainfluenza, lepto •Bordetella (kennel cough) •General deworm •Canine Influenza •Start on heartworm preventive 12–15 weeks Puppy 3rd series •Rabies $15 Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain and central nervous system, transmitted by bodily fluids from an infected animal. The most common form of transmission is a bite wound. •Canine Influenza $25 identified in the United States in 2004. Since then, CIV has continued to spread, now detected in dogs in 30 states including Texas. Most dogs have no immunity to canine influenza and infection spreads quickly through animal shelters, pet stores, boarding kennels, veterinary clinics, or anywhere dogs congregate. •Distemper, adenovirus II, parvo, parainfluenza, lepto •Bordetella (kennel cough) Over 15 weeks old 4th series • Distemper, adenovirus II, parvo, parainfluenza, lepto • Bordetella (kennel cough) Rescue or Adopted Dog or Puppy over 15 weeks without prior vaccinations •Distemper, adenovirus II, parvo, parainfluenza, lepto- DA2PP+Lepto (1-year vaccine): $25 Distemper—Attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems; is very contagious; and spread through saliva, urine, or tears from an infected dog. Symptoms include fever, runny nose and eyes, diarrhea, weight loss, seizures, and death. •Bordetella (kennel cough)1-year vaccine): $20 Kennel cough is characterized by a continual cough generally noted after boarding or contact with unfamiliar dogs. This vaccine will help prevent kennel cough, but cannot guarantee complete immunity. Some kennels require this vaccine every 6 months. •Occult heartworm test •For puppies or adult dogs over 5 months old with no previous vaccination history, include a rabies vaccine DA2PP+Lepto (1-year vaccine): $25 DAP Continuum 3 (3-year vaccine for distemper, parvo, and adenovirus): $40 This 3-year DAP is only available to adult dogs who have already had the initial series of •Adenovirus type II—Affects the liver, kidneys, eyes, and other organs; is very contagious; and spreads through the urine, feces, or saliva of an infected dog. Symptoms range from slight fever, congestion, and clouding of the eye (a condition called “blue eye”) to prolonged bleeding, severe depression, and death. •Parainfluenza—Typically a mild respiratory infection in otherwise healthy dogs, it can be severe in puppies or debilitated dogs. •Parvovirus—Attacks the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, spread through the feces of a contaminated dog. Parvovirus can survive in the environment for long periods of time and is very contagious. The disease can cause fever and loss of appetite, as well as diarrhea and vomiting that can quickly lead to dehydration and death. •Leptospirosis—Caused by bacteria in the urine of infected animals or people. Wild animals such as rats or raccoons can urinate in puddles, ponds, and other sources, contaminating the water. The Flower Mound and Lewisville areas have seen a recent surge in leptospirosis cases. Leptospirosis vaccine (1-year vaccine): $20 Bordetella (kennel cough, 1-year vaccine): $20 Lyme disease (1-year vaccine): $20 This vaccine is recommended for dogs that are, or will be, in tick-infested areas. Occult heartworm test: $40 This test is required on an annual basis prior to receiving heartworm preventive. Old English Sheepdog Texas
